Who are we as a society or Americans???

Why are we always so judgmental? Why do we stare? Why is society always so one sided sometimes?? As men and women, we all have a voice but it is how we use it and express our feelings. (pg 314) Wood states, as women and men, you can affect what society expects of and admits in each sex. The past is what we can learn from and the future is how we can change and educate others. Today, I was out to dinner with someone and they made a comment that bothered me. This person said "look at him, he is flaming!" My first reaction was like SO. Is is you, why do you care what someone sexual preference is.????? It is not your life. There are so many colors, opinions, feelings, cultures in this world that we are not and will all never be the same. But the one thing I know is that the stereotypes, staring, UN-education will still exist unless this generation changes the views of many others. We According to Wood, (313) the future is open!!!! Education and learning is everything! Whether you are gay, straight, transgender, we are all still humans no matter what and should be treated with respect and dignity!

I have always wondered why people are so judgmental and why everyone has to be labeled. The media has gotten so out of hand with it. I believe that this contributes to the oppression of different groups. I agree with you that education is very important and can help people see past the labels which hopefully will lead to treating others with respect and dignity.

Very interesting Rachel, is it because we are dealing with our own insecurities? We live in a world where our confidence is predicted on how someone else see's us. We fail to be our own advocates and let the views of others and the media control who we really are.
I agree with the flaming issue, we live in a world where it seems that people get enjoyment out of laughing at those that are sexually oriented different then what they accept and enjoy. I feel like if its not hurting you then why do you care what people do in their own private time or space. And just as quoted below, the future is open!! No matter what or who you are respect is key and should be given and received at all times.

Response to Rachel's post.6/17/08.
The society seems to be a little bit better over here in U.S. as compare to other parts of the world , I have travelled in Asian countries where people really stare at any one who looks different than normal male or females,it is very uncomfortable to deal with that siuation. We should really respect each other's feecrowlsklings. Wood's p314," As women and men,you can affect what society expects of and admires in each sex".

I have to agree Rachel. When I use to work at Commerce Bank there was a guy there that use to be married had children but acted kind of "gay." He was the nicest person and would do anything for you. Whenever we would go out in public people would always make comments about him being gay. He is a Latin man and had no shame in hugging another man or respecting ladies. I think people misunderstood his kindness and generosity with him being gay. I don't think I'm judgmental against gays and lesbians, I just never understood it. I have a few cousins that are lesbians and can actually understand their feelings and actions after talking with them about it. I think a lot of people judge what they don't understand. It’s sad but true...

Lakisha,

You may be right where it is our insecurities on why we need to judge other. I know I say a lot of jokes, but I try not to hurt anyones feelings and if I do, I feel really bad. I never try to judge anyone on their sexual preference only because it is just a little part of them, not the whole person!

Rachel, I agree with you we are all human and we should be able to feel free to express ourselves in any manner and not be judged. In order to create a better future then the past (which has formed who we are today) we have to be willing to learn about things that are different then we are (p314). In order to not have a world where people are made to feel dirty and discriminated against we have to move out of ignorance because once we do then we can learn about orientations that are different then ours and have acceptance.
